On January 20, 2025, Amb. Chen Daojiang, China’s Permanent Representative to the ISA, paid a courtesy call on Leticia Carvalho, the new Secretary-General of the ISA.

Amb. Chen congratulated Secretary-General Carvalho on taking up the position and stated that China attaches great importance to international seabed affairs, and will always support Secretary-General’s work and firmly support the ISA in fulfilling its duties and mission mandated by UNCLOS. China would like to work with the ISA and all parties, adhere to the concept of a community with a shared future for humanity, participate in the development of the exploitation regulations constructively, expand deep sea cooperation, enhance developing countries’ capacity building, and advance the deep sea cause in an orderly manner, making greater contribution to the common well-being of humanity.
Secretary-General Carvalho expressed thanks to Amb. Chen and stressed that China is a critical supporter and participant in international seabed affairs. As a representative from Global South, she will lead the Secretariat to deepen cooperation with China, and advance the implementation of the common heritage of mankind.
